Basic economy is the fare the airline advertises and the fare that costs the most once you add what a family needs.
What is removed
- Seat selection: assigned at check-in, which can scatter a family across the plane (airlines say they seat children under a certain age with an adult; they do not promise the rest).
- Carry-on bags on some carriers (United and American domestic) and checked bags on nearly all.
- Changes and cancellations, beyond the 24-hour rule.
- Upgrades and most elite benefits.
When it is fine
A solo traveler or a couple with backpacks on a short domestic flight, with a card that includes a free bag (the airline cards do, and the restriction often lifts for cardholders).
When it is not
Any flight with children who need to sit next to a parent, any flight with a car seat and a stroller, any transatlantic flight where the bag fee is $75 each way. Price the main cabin fare with the bags included; the app’s fare check shows the difference.
The Shabbos angle
A basic fare that cannot be changed is a fare that cannot move to Thursday when the Friday weather forecast turns. On a Friday flight, pay for the changeable fare.
Shabbos Away earns a commission when you are approved for a card or complete a booking through some links. Offers and terms change; the issuer’s or seller’s page governs. Every halachic note is a starting point for a question to your rav, not a ruling.
Plan the trip in the Shabbos Away app: the Shabbos check on every leg, candle lighting anywhere, the kosher map, and the alerts that never arrive on Shabbos.
Search flights and hotels
Every airline and agency compared, hotels too; bookings support Shabbos Away. Run a Friday landing through the Shabbos check in the app first.
