                  Once per day of travel, after you have left the city (past the last houses, Shulchan Aruch OC 110:7 and MB 110:29), within the first parsa of the road (about 72 minutes, MB 110:29); a journey shorter than a parsa, without the Shem and Malchus (OC 110:7). Standing if you can stop (OC 110:4, MB 110:23); in a car, the driver says it seated. On a plane: after takeoff is the common practice; many say it on the taxi to the runway (Igros Moshe OC 2:59). Attach it to a bracha if you can, Rema OC 110:6: say it after a snack and bracha acharona, or after asher yatzar. The text ends with "shomei'a tefillah".

                  Hagomel

                  After the flight, at the next kriyas haTorah, within three days where possible (OC 219:6 and MB 219:20). Whether an ordinary flight obligates Hagomel is a machlokes: the common practice outside Israel is to say it after an overseas flight; ask your rav for a domestic one.

                    Thresholds are our calibration from October 2026 fares (El Al from $1,000 for November, Israir and Arkia one-ways $430 to $620, Lufthansa one-stops $1,100 to $1,320). One-way nonstop: under $550 good, under $450 great. Business round-trip: under $3,500 good, under $2,800 great.

                        • Book midweek, 6 to 8 weeks out for off-peak; set watches 6 to 10 months out for Pesach, summer and Tishrei.
                        • El Al runs a Black FlyDay sale around Thanksgiving; watch late November.
                        • Positioning: cheap transatlantic to London, Milan, Rome, Budapest, Bucharest, Warsaw or Athens, then Wizz Air, Aegean or LOT to TLV, on separate tickets with an overnight buffer. Ryanair and easyJet are not flying to Israel.
                        • Kosher meals: El Al is kosher by default; on other carriers order KSML 48 to 72 hours ahead; low-cost carriers have none.
                        • ETA-IL: every traveler, infants included, needs one before boarding; apply at least 72 hours ahead on the official portal (israel-entry.piba.gov.il); valid two years; airlines deny boarding without it.
                        • Bags: El Al Economy Lite has no checked bag; Classic includes 23 kg; Air Canada YYZ fares include a bag.

                        Shabbos Away is a travel planner for Orthodox Jewish travelers: route planning around Shabbos and Yom Tov, zmanim for any point on the trip, Chabad Houses, shuls, kosher food, mikvaos and eruvin on one map, a siddur, Chumash and Tehillim offline, deals scored by Jewish infrastructure, and a community of travelers who check in, host, and gather a minyan. Founded by Rabbi Binyomin Terebelo, master sofer, founder of the Museum of the Scroll and master distiller of Terebelo Distillery. Halachic settings and notes are documented with sources; none of it replaces your Rav.

                        Privacy policy

                        What we store: in this prototype, your settings, trip, check-ins and reservations live only in your browser’s storage on your device; nothing is sent to a server. With accounts, we will store the profile you enter, your trips and check-ins, and your messaging preferences, on servers in the United States. Location: used only while the app is open and only after you tap “Use my location”; it is never logged during Shabbos or Yom Tov and never sold. We do not sell personal data. Third parties: Amazon, card issuers and travel partners receive only what you give them on their own sites. Your rights: see, export or delete your data by contacting us; EU and Israeli residents have the rights set by GDPR and the Israeli Privacy Protection Law. Children: the service is for adults 18 and over. Changes to this policy are posted here with the date.

                        Usage counts: on the live site the app sends anonymous event counts (which tab was opened, that a trip was checked, which deal was viewed) with a random device id that is hashed per day; never your name, contact details, trip or location. The Mehadrin address sends nothing.

                        Listings are a community directory. Confirm every address, minyan time, hechsher and eruv status before relying on it; the app never certifies anything kosher on its own authority. Zmanim are calculated for sea level with the NOAA solar algorithm and are accurate to about a minute; check a local luach for candle lighting customs. Halachic notes are general and are not a psak for your situation. You are responsible for local laws on alcohol purchase and shipping; spirits are for adults of legal drinking age.
